Audio Transcripts
Some assets -- such as videos, interviews, and oral histories -- will have audio transcripts. Audio transcripts appear in the "Transcript" tab next to the "Summary" tab on the right-hand side of the image viewer. The transcript for a specific item can be searched by using the "Search this document" search box in the top-right. Search results will appear highlighted in yellow in the transcript, and detailed results will appear under the image viewer in the "Search Results" tab. The transcripts can also be searched via the global search as detailed in Searching Our Catalog.
While playing audio, the "Auto Scroll" option will be on by default. This will continously scroll the transcript to match with the audio currently playing. You can also click the orange time stamp in the transcript to jump directly to that point in the audio.

Text Transcriptions
Some of the textual items in the digital catalog include transcription. When available, the transcript appears in the "Transcript" tab next to the "Summary" tab on the right-hand side of the image viewer. Some transcripts were created using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and some others were created with Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR). OCR is used to recognized typewritten text while HTR is used to recognize and transcribe handwritten text. In other cases, the transcripts were created by hand. These transcripts are "raw" transcriptions that are stripped of special formatting. The content of the text remains the close as possible to the original document but the removal of special formatting allows the transcripts to be searched and discoverable by users. The unformatted transcription is what the catalog searches when a user runs a search with the "full text" filter, which is turned on by default for every search; see Refining Your Search to learn how to restrict your search to only metadata or only transcripts. Please be aware that the transcriptions are imperfect, especially for older handwritten items. You can report errors or imperfections on our Contact Us page.
